Do We Have to Protect Intellectual Properties?

Assalamuaikum and good day to all.

So today the lecture is soo interesting handled by amazing inspiring people; Dr Zawiyah. I'm not gonna fall asleep even if the lecture went for hours, believe me,she got some 'granny' power, telling the students funny stories based on her own experiences..coming along are the catching intonation and emotion..haha.It would be nice if all lecturers are like her.mihihihi.

I'm just sharing what i've learnt in lecture today.Basically it's about the intellectual properties.Interesting is it? Not? Mehhh..

Intellectual Properties?

What is actually intellectual properties or harta intelek in malay? Have u seen sort of 'all right reserved' words in any products from entertaiment media to as little stuff as card's design? Generally, what can be said is; all of these stuffs are the intellectual properties which are protected which means exclusive right are recognized.

And,i dont know whether this applied to all,but as long as i know,we have to pay for any of our product for it to be as one of the intellectual properties (IP). heww heww..so it is figured out that any creations or products can't be simply declared as protected properties. Not even if  you made the known  'Hakcipta Terpelihara' by handwritting. *terasa* And the payment is not the same standard as your nicole dress or vincci shoes..mark my word. From what i ve heard from one of the Les' Copaque's staff, one IP properties cost thousands and they are paying for more than one IP (Upin Ipin,Puteri and any other of their products) to be one of the Intellectual Properties. So what about the the recipes of KFC anc Coca Cola? and the known sound of Windows when it is starting? the logo of Apple products? the tagline of 'i'm lovin it' of McD? All of these are one of the IPs in the world and..and..and let us not waste our time trying to figure out how much they cost. And that explained why the recipes of Coke and KFC still remain secret till today.

In other words, intellectual properties are not the properties which one can easily copy and manipulate and the owner of the properties are exclusively recognized.IP can be the cartoon series, novels, poems, music, books, art designs and many more..hehe..i forgot already some of the content in the slides. -__- .

Granny's stories

Actually it is not the IP thinggy that caught my attention during the lecture, the granny's stories did. loll..imma such a kid.Meehh.

In a sighing intonation she said, "Saya ni dah nak dekat 10 buah buku saya tulis, tapi tak kaya kaya jugak..sebab apa? sebab buku saya asyik kena xerox dari kulit ke kulit!"  *terasa*

But she does't make any indictment. It was when she is a lecturer and the student was asking some question based on the books without knowing that the author of the book is her/his very own lecturer.tsk tsk tsk.But but..even if she does't,there was another western minded lecturer from Ireland presented at that moment, and he looked at the xeroxed book, called the publisher and reported it. That particular student are lucky enough that she/he managed to put some nice reasons or whatever word it was to the lecturer..and escaped.

So the point here is,the way we (Eastern or Malaysian) treat the copyright issues are so different from the way western treat them.In westen,UK or US,those who xerox or copy others' work shall be sue and this, also applied to a 'to-be table, broken piano'.Granny's story tell you how come.

"Dekat sana nak phostosat mahal.Satu helai cost me about 6 pound and 1 pound equal to 7 ringgit malaysia at that time.No wonder lah dekat sana satu mesin photostat pun payah nak jumpa.Memang orang taknak photostat, sebab mahal..Masa tu pulak saya ni tengah buat thesis, rumah tak ada meja.Nak jimat, saya belilah piano kecik tu,murah je it only cost me around 2 pounds.Lepas tu,saya keluarkan semua isi segala besi yang ada dalam piano tu tinggal lah base die saje.Tapi yang saya nak meja, belakang rumah ada carpenter, saya pon hantarlah kedai suruh die kasi piano tu jadi meja."

"And you know what shock me the most? The carpenter asked me:Have you apply for the paten madam?.Saya pun terkejutlah kenapa pulak sampai kene apply paten? And the carpenter asnwered:I dont want you to sue me if there is anybody else who did the same thing as you do turning a piano into a writting table."

note:Paten will make the products availabe to be reproduce by others.sort of.

Goshh..do you see how is the thinking of the western when it comes to copyright issues? Pheww.

In western countries,"If you want my intellegence, you have to pay me.Then only i will share with you"

It is amazingly different in eastern countries where the copyright issue are not that big matters.Just take a look here in Malaysia, kedai photostat berlambak tepi jalan.*ehh* And in fact the copyright issues are so up in the chinesee speaking countries such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, *and some others,i forgot this too* And this has something to do with their culture;sharing information.

In eastern countries,"I got new information and i must share this with others"

See the differences?

And Dr Zawiyah squeezed in the middle.Between western and eastern culture.mihihi.. And till last, she does't really mentioned if the intellectual properties really need to be protected or not.She has been living in both culture,i bet she know how is it feels. But one thing for sure,of course we can share the information in a right way.Using quotes and only xerox 5% of the materials and some other ways are allowed. But 5% is like..mehhhh..sikitnye. And below is one of her saying.

"Those who says intellectual properties need to be protected, you are actually have been brainwashed by the western" (Dr Zawiyah,2013)
